Course Description
This course introduces the basic concepts and skills of mathematics for grade 3 students.
The course covers topics such as mental calculations, length, weight, volume, conversions, graphs, fractions, time, geometry, and area and perimeter. The course also provides opportunities for students to practice and apply their mathematical thinking through word problems and review activities.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Use mental calculation strategies to add, subtract, multiply, and divide up to 100
- Measure and compare the length of objects using standard and non−standard units
- Solve length, weight, and volume word problems using addition and subtraction
- Measure and compare the weight of objects and volume of objects
- Convert between different units of length, weight, and volume
- Interpret and create bar graphs and pictographs using data
- Identify and name unit fractions and equivalent fractions
- Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator
- Calculate elapsed time using a number line or a clock
- Identify and describe 2D and 3D shapes and their attributes
- Measure and compare the area and perimeter of shapes using square units
- Solve area and perimeter word problems using addition and subtraction
Course Outline
The course is divided into 14 units, each consisting of several lessons and activities.
Course Assessment
The course assessment will consist of:
- Quizzes: These are informal checks for understanding that will be done after each unit.
- Reviews: These are formal evaluations that will be done at the end of the course.
