Course Description

This course introduces the basic concepts and skills of mathematics for grade 5 students.

The course covers topics such as whole numbers, multiplication, division, order of operations, word problems, fractions, mixed numbers, area, ratios, and angles. The course also provides opportunities for students to practice and apply their mathematical thinking through word problems and review activities.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Read, write, and compare whole numbers up to 10,000
  • Multiply and divide whole numbers up to 4 digits by 2 digits using various strategies
  • Apply the order of operations to simplify expressions involving whole numbers
  • Solve word problems involving whole numbers using various strategies
  • Identify and write fractions and mixed numbers using numerators and denominators
  • Convert between fractions and mixed numbers
  • Compare and order fractions and mixed numbers using symbols and models
  • Find the product of a fraction and a whole number or a fraction
  • Solve word problems involving fractions and mixed numbers using various strategies
  • Measure and calculate the area of triangles and composite figures using formulas
  • Find and write ratios using words, fractions, and colons
  • Solve word problems involving ratios using various strategies
  • Identify, classify, and measure angles
