What is a Tutor?

A tutor is a person charged with the instruction and guidance of another. Their job is to find a student’s strengths and weaknesses in whichever subject they need the extra help. In talking with the student, a tutor can make an effective study plan that works best with the student’s learning style. Personal tutoring allows the student to learn and grow at their own pace. A tutor is able to work out ways to teach, challenge, and build the confidence of the pupil.

“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”

Albert Einstein

Ask any teacher why they chose to teach, and most will answer that they love watching students light up when they learn something new, or finally understand a hard concept. Unfortunately, many teachers aren’t able to focus on any one student’s needs. They can modify the curriculum with good intentions and programs meant to keep children from falling behind in the class. However, with classrooms growing to max capacity, one-on-one instruction is nearly impossible.

This learning gap is where a private tutor can step in to give the extra guidance needed for the student to keep up with, and even surpass, their peers in the classroom. Each tutoring session is made to fit the learning style of each student. This helps the tutor to find weak points in their understanding. With the extra help of a personalized tutor student’s make those connections in problem solving that used to frustrate them. They are able to think outside the box. When they understand what they are learning, they build confidence and then there’s no stopping them.

“You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.”

Clay P. Bedford

The aim of a private tutor is to lend help to those needing a little extra instruction outside of the classroom. Their goal is to build self-esteem and light the flame of understanding in each student. Asking if a tutor is better than being taught in a  classroom by a teacher is trivial. A better solution would be to ask, are they learning all they can and more, at a level they can succeed from. Learning may be a matter of opinion, but knowledge is a state of mind. We should nuture it and never stop growing, never stop learning. TalkSTEM[1] said it best,

“[…]The ultimate goal of education is to spark a pursuit of knowledge in the child, so that they keep on learning as they grow into whoever they choose to be.”
