A parent approached me,” How do I get my student ready for this school that we hope to have her attend in the fall? The school placement test is about one month away.”
So, how did we do this?
Well, here at Tampa Bay Test Prep, we don’t have a one size fit all approach. Instead we like to pick a variety of activities that have the following qualities:
- interactive, hands-on
- visual
- challenging
- reinforcing
And put them together to provide the perfect fit for your child.
First we started with taking a look at the topics that are on the test. Then we got feedback from the parent as to which topics the student does well in or struggles with, and any particular type of learning style that the student favors.
Then we put together worksheets, practice questions, and interactive activities that met the criteria.
Here is a sample of the first 14 days put together for the student.
It covers topics (in order) that progress from counting to 100 to adding and subtracting up to 10.
- Counting to 100, Skip counting 2s.
- Skip Counting 5s
- Skip Counting 10s
- Comparison of Numbers
- Pattern Recognition
- Addition up to 5
- Addition Word Problems
- Interactive Activities
- Addition up to 10
- Subtraction up to 5
- Subtraction up to 10
- Mixed Addition and Subtraction
- Measurement
Notice that the plan includes specific sections in ixl.com to worksheets from math-aids.com and other online activities.
Interactive activities keep your child engaged. And, a variety of activities will let them try different things that all lead to the same goal. Written worksheet help students to take the time to revise their work until they get the answer right. Online problem sets give immediate feedback.
The parent was happy with the plan, and found it easy to execute.
